Lauren Reporting Live at Sea
In 2021, I became a licensed skipper. My family traveled to the Grenadines where we completed the practical and written tests to become sailing captains, but not before experiencing a hurricane.
Last Day in the USA (feat. Giorgio's Bakery)
Our sailing adventure is about to begin, but first, I need some key lime pie. Check out Giorgio's Bakery in Hollywood Florida for a delicious and affordable breakfast, lunch, and dinner plus a spectacular waterfront view.
Arrival at the Beautiful Blue Lagoon Hotel
Take a look at the view from the check in desk at the Blue Lagoon. We're quarantined here for 24 hours, plenty of time to brush up on my nautical studying! Look out for a video about Covid regulations on the island coming soon!
What it's Like Traveling Internationally in a Pandemic
Take a look at all the hoops we had to jump through just to get on the plane. Traveling right now certainly isn't an easy feat with many test, vaccination, and quarantine requirements.
Day 3: Exploring Baradel! Turtles, Fish Friends, Great Views, and Dingy Driving!
We dingyed ashore and checked out the uninhabited island of Baradel in the Tobago Keys. We saw some awesome fish I gave names of my own, and I got to drive the dingy!
Day 1: Sailing to Bequia! Lauren at the Helm!
Fun Fact: Finding WiFi is hard on the high seas! Here's a video from Sunday, our first day on the boat. I got to take the helm and head us into Bequia, where we got some drinks and checked out the island.
Day 3: Lauren's Driving the Boat!
I took helm on Tuesday and took us from the Tobago Cays to Union Island where we spent the night!
Day 5: Tested Again?! Our 4th Covid Test in a Week!
In order to get back into the United States, we have to have a negative covid test within three days of our flight. Nothing will wake you up like a stick up your nose. It's faster than coffee!
Day 5: Lauren's Docking a 46 Foot Catamaran?!
Watch out! The big cat needs to be docked, and Lauren's at the wheel. We practiced docking and man overboard drills before sailing to a beautiful beach on Mayreau Island.
Day 5: Weather Warning! Sailing Through a Storm with Lauren at the Helm!
We're speeding back to St. Vincent to avoid weather but got caught in bumpy seas. Don't worry, I've got it under control...
Day 6: How to Survive a Hurricane! Elsa Headed for Lauren
Hurricane Elsa is headed for St. Vincent, bringing winds, water, and rough seas, so we're off the boat and in a hotel. Barefoot Yacht Charters is taking great care of us! The weather has been gradually worsening, and the eye is said to pass through in just a few hours.
Day 6: Hit by Hurricane Elsa! Experiencing Gale Force
Hurricane Elsa has hit, and she doesn't seem to be in the mood to 'Let It Go." I was drenched after being outside for less than 60 seconds.
Day 6: Ripped Off the Mooring - The Force of Hurricane Elsa
Hurricanes are no joke. The strong winds and seas from Elsa caused a mooring line to break, pushing the boat into an unsafe position with its keel on the ocean floor.
Day 7: Down and Dirty! Climbing in the Engine!
With Hurricane Elsa blown by, the wind and waters are back to their tranquility which means we're back on the boat. Today we learned about the engine and what to look for in engine checks. I'm feeling more and more confident about being a skipper every day!
Checking Out Ruins the Last Day on the Boat
It's our final day on the boat. We've had an amazing time with Bryan and Barefoot Yacht Charters learning how to sail a catamaran. For the last day, we checked out one of the local historic sites, Fort Duvernette, or as the locals call it, Rock Fort. The from the top was spectacular and a great end to our trip.
